Current Volunteer Opportunities
Please read through each opportunity, choose the one that interests you the most and fits in with your work/school schedule, and then contact the staff person listed at the end of each one for more information and to set up a meeting with him/her so you can get started. Thanks so much for your interest in our work! Lend a hand to middle and high school students who need extra help: Tutors and mentors are needed for second language learners and other students at our after-school programs at Deal Middle School and Wilson High School. This is near the Tenleytown Metro station! Only a TWO-HOUR PER WEEK commitment! Choose to work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Volunteers will help students with their homework and lead educational enrichment activities. Most students in the program have been identified by their teachers as struggling in school and in need of extra help. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! TB TEST and BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIRED, however. Contact Larissa Jackson at larissa@layc-dc.org or (202)373-2083 for more information or to sign up for an information session. Become a Supplemental Services Provider (SES) tutor. LAYC has been approved by the city to be an SES provider. We offer tutoring services at several District of Columbia schools. If you have a college degree (or are currently working toward one) and can commit several hours a week (but not every day) to tutoring during the after-school hours of approximately 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., please contact Jeremy Vera or Laura Schuetz: Jeremy@layc-dc.org or lschuetz@layc-dc.org 202.319.2806 ext. 24 Do you have childcare experience? Help us to provide childcare for parents who are participating in our programs. We need help from responsible people who love children to come work at our main building on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7pm. Please contact Allison Bayley, Youth Developer with our Teen Health Promoters Program: 202.319.2263 or allison@layc-dc.org Help make the holidays special for the youth and families we serve: Every year we serve a full Thanksgiving Dinner to participants in our programs and the community at large. We always need a lot of help in serving the dinner, organizing the entertainment for the evening, setting up the “dining” room, and, of course, in clean up. This year, our dinner will be served on Tuesday November 25th. We will need volunteers from about 4 8 p.m. We will assign you a shift so it is possible that you do not have to stay for the whole time. We also throw a large year-end Holiday Party for youth and their families. This year’s party is Thursday December 18h. We will need help setting up Santa’s Workshop, serving food and drink, handing out gifts, set up and clean up between the hours of 4- 8 p.m. Please contact Amy Kunz at amy@layc-dc.org or 202.319.2256 if you would like to help at either Thanksgiving or at the Holiday Party…or both! |
