AmeriCorps members are ready to serve the community!

AmeriCorps Member Rosa Barrientos is clear about why she joined AmeriCorps: “I joined AmeriCorps because I wanted to give back to youth in the community. Education is an important part of children’s life, and I want to contribute in any way I can. By the end of the year, I would like to see students self-motivated to learn.” Barrientos is one of LAYC’s 47 AmeriCorps members serving in Washington, DC and Maryland.

Maryland Multicultural Youth Center’s 16 Corps members are completing pre-service training. They are learning how to create lesson plans, manage a classroom, and develop time management skills as well as the importance of community service. They will apply what they have learned operating an after-school program at William Wirt Middle School in Riverdale. DC ‘s 31 Corps members have completed training and begun service at Powell Elementary and MacFarland Middle Schools in Ward 4, where they operate programs in three areas: Education, Health, and Civic Engagement. Corps members come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. LAYC is pleased to have 11 second- year members and 12 former program participants.

Eunice Humphrey coordinates the Corps members in Maryland; Karen Brumbaugh is the DC AmeriCorps Coordinator. Brumbaugh notes that “AmeriCorps provides opportunities for youth to continue their development and to use the skills they learned as participants to give back to the community.”

Jose Fuentes, a first-year member, describes AmeriCorps as “a great opportunity” and is “excited to gain new experiences.” Adds Brumbaugh, “The AmeriCorps team is a unified group; they are ready to take on the commitment to serve in the community.”
