On Monday, July 14, 2008, more than 100 junior and senior high school students from all over the country participating in an internship program by Bank of America, stopped by the Latin American Youth Center as they visited DC on a field trip.
While in DC, the students--who are mainly being taught civic, social and business leadership skills--learned about LAYC‘s 40 year history, spoke to staff and youth about their experience at the center and toured the organization’s main sites.
The students participate in the Student Leaders program, an internship program which places young people at non-profits organizations across the nation.
At a panel presentation featuring LAYC’s executive director, Lori Kaplan, and other staff members, the group of students dug deep and asked the panelists questions regarding pathways to leadership, identifying community needs, success stories, building a powerful organization, among others.
The group of students, who demonstrated great commitment in their communities, received a wealth of information about issues affecting young people today and possible solutions to address those problems to help the students with their mission of building and sustaining vibrant neighborhoods.
